LitFUSE Blog Tour: Songbird Under a German Moon

ABOUT THE BOOK:
The year is 1945. The war is over and 21-year-old Betty Lake has been invited to Europe to sing in a USO tour for American soldiers who now occupy Hitler's Germany. The first nights performance is a hit. Betty becomes enthralled with the applause, the former Nazi-held mansion they're housed in and the attention of Frank Witt, the US Army Signal Corp Photographer. Yet the next night this songbird is ready to fly the coop when Betty's dear friend, Kat, turns up missing. Betty soon realizes Franks photographs could be the key to finding Kat. Betty and Frank team up against post-war Nazi influences and the two lovebirds' hearts may find the answers...in each other. But will they have a chance for their romance to sing? The truth will be revealed under a German moon.

Lisa's Thoughts:
Tricia Goyer takes her readers back in time to an era of war-torn despondency, giving them a fascinating peek inside the historic Festspielhaus opera house, built by German composer Wagner, where USO singers entertained the troops. I enjoyed reading the history woven throughout the novel. The characters' distinct voices and personalities add flavor to the time period. Songbird Under a German Moon honors those who fought for their country, and those who supported them.

40 Blessings

Today is the last day I will spend as a forty-year-old. Yes, tomorrow I turn 41. I embraced turning forty and celebrated with family and friends. Turning 35 was so much harder for me. As I remembered the events of the past year, I became overwhelmed by the incredible blessings God has given us. Yes, there have been tough times, but God was with us every step of the way. None of our trials surprised Him. Our blessings outweighed the struggles, though. Here are forty blessings that have happened to my family and me this past year.

  1. God loves me for who I am and not what I am. His amazing grace washes over me daily.
  2. I have an amazing family.

  7. I have yet to go hungry.
  8. I have a job. Sometimes it's extremely stressful, but for the most part, I'm blessed and amazed by what I encounter daily.
  9. Graduating summa cum laude from college
  10. Cyber movie nights with my two online BFFs.
  11. Miracles and answered prayers when my FIL had emergency surgery for a brain tumor.
  12. Quality Christian fiction to read.
  13. Proud tears as our oldest son graduated high school.
  14. Sanibel Island vacations
  15. VBS--one of my favorite parts of summer

A Firm Foundation

On Friday, I blogged about my modern day princess and the pea issues. Last night, I moved my bed back to its original position. When I removed the mattress, I was relieved to see no pea nesting on the box springs. After sliding off the mattress and box springs, I moved the bed frame with attached headboard (not an easy task by myself). Once the frame was in place, I slid the box springs back in place and covered it with the dust ruffle that matches our comforter. I remember thinking how firm the box springs were when I kneeled in the middle to put the fabric in place. The firm foundation is needed for the mattress to serve its purpose appropriately. Without that foundation, my mattress would sag on the frame, dipping in the middle and causing an even worse night's sleep.

Yesterday our pastor used the Leaning Tower of Pisa as an sermon illustration to remind us of the importance of a strong foundation. If the foundation is not secure, the building will fall. Areas hit by earthquakes are experiencing crumbling buildings due to the foundation being shaken and damaged.

In her blog post today, Rachelle Gardner talks about the importance of perseverance. Writers seeking publication often dream of getting "the call." They spend years laying the foundation for their writing--learning the elements of story crafting, creating memorable characters, upping the tension, adding story world, etc. Sometimes writers are too eager to get that publishing contract and rush to submit work that is not ready--their foundations are shaky. Writers can strengthen their writing foundations by learning the craft, attending writers conferences and retreats, submitting entries to contests for feedback.

Foundations are not limited to buildings and writing. We need a foundation for our lives--our values, identity, goals. Life is crazy enough without having a firm foundation to support us. So what is that firm foundation? Not what, but who.

Jesus.

Believing in Him gives us peace and strength to get through those crazy life moments that bring us down. Jesus needs to be our firm foundation. If Jesus is not your foundation, what are you waiting for? Believing in Him is as easy as ABC.

Modern Day Princess and the Pea?

When I was younger, I remember reading the story of the Princess and the Pea. Maybe I'm a princess at heart, but I don't sleep well.

I don't like my bed.

There. I said it. The truth is out.

Our mattress is only a couple of years old. I LOVED it...at first. So comfy. The place where I slept fitfully and well...you know. ;)

A couple of months ago, I had this brilliant idea of rearranging my bedroom to make room for my writing desk. Our house, while not tiny, has limited "me space." So my ever-so-patient hubby helped me move furniture, knowing full well I'd probably ask him to do it again soon.

So we turned our bed and put the headboard against the opposite wall. Then realization snapped me like a wet towel.

For the first time in over 20 years of marriage, I would be sleeping on the wrong side of the bed.

I've perfected my sleeping position. I slept on my left side, knee at 90 degree angle with my arms hugging my pillow.

Well, I tried that on my right side. Just does not work. It's like wearing your pants backward--yes, they're on, but oh so uncomfortable.

Oh, and another thing...I've been having the weirdest, craziest dreams ever since I switched sides.

This morning I hobbled out of bed like an eighty-five-year-old woman. My shoulder hurts. My hand feels numb. My back aches. Whine whine whine.

Tomorrow the bed goes back to the original position. Hopefully while moving it again, we won't find any peas.

Blog Tour Spot: Found Art by Leeana Tankersley

Debut author Leeana Tankersley constructs a literary collage of memories and mementoes from living in the Middle East during the Iraq War in her travel memoir, Found Art: Discovering Beauty in Foreign Places (Nov. 2009). She reflects on discovering beauty in a foreign land by weaving together her experiences living in the Persian Gulf for a year.
After marrying a Navy SEAL, Tankersley moved over 8,000 miles away from her home in San Diego to Bahrain where her husband was stationed. She retraces her steps through the Middle East, and she recalls the subtle changes in herself that left her utterly transformed. Somewhere between bartering in a souq, a Middle Eastern market, and wearing a borrowed abaya, an Islamic overgarment, to tour the Grand Mosque, Tankersley found a profound beauty in the unknown that sunk beneath her skin.
Found Art is an insightful collection of stories that Tankersley crafts into a literary piece of artwork. With an artist’s eye she combines bits of memories and trinkets – a handwritten note from Kuwait, a braid of fringe from a Persian rug, a Navy SEAL Trident – to create her own piece of Found Art. She celebrates what most would overlook – a receipt from the Russian-Georgian restaurant on Louisiana Street, a bit of basting thread – to piece together a work of unexpected beauty.
“Writing, for me, is often about two things,” says Tankersley, “creative processing and authentic giving. The book has been my way of working through, and then salvaging, the bits and pieces of Bahrain. In that sense, I wrote it for myself, so that I would never forget. Also, I wrote the book for those who are feeling lost, as I have felt so often. Ideally it offers the honest gifts of permission and validation and hope and beauty.”
Perfect for book clubs or small groups, Tankersley includes discussion prompts broken down by chapter for personal or group reflection. Tankersley invites readers into her deepest insecurities and her greatest joys of living in a foreign place. Her writing encourages readers to discover the beauty of the foreign places in their own lives – whether it be a year abroad or entering a new season of life.

His Hand Over Mine

The other day I helped a child write the letter of his first name. I cupped my hand over his and demonstrated how to make a straight line, beginning at the top and going to the bottom, and then adding two bumps. That may not be the technical explanation for a letter B, but he needed to hear it in a way he could understand.

This has been an exciting week for me so far. Last Monday, I let go and submitted my completed manuscript to Rachelle Gardner of WordServe Literary, who had requested it at the 2009 ACFW conference. Two days ago, I received an email from her concerning that manuscript.

I read her email, and reread it to make sure there wasn't some mistake. The words slowly sunk in as tears filled my eyes and spilled down my face. I told my friend that it was like holding a teacup over an exploding fire hydrant. I had to pull myself together quickly because I was in the middle of the busiest part of my day. But I grabbed the phone and called one of my closest friends to share what I had read.

I'm excited to announce...I'm now represented by Rachelle Gardner!!!

We spoke on the phone yesterday about my novel and the direction we are taking. I need to submit some things to her, so she can put together a proposal package. She plans to submit my manuscript to the editor who requested the full at the same conference. Yes, my cup ranneth over at that conference.

One thing that stood out to me in her email was Rachelle's comment about the two of us partnering together. Working together, we hope to launch my writing career.

But, you know what? I have another partner, too. I didn't write this book alone. I'm not talking about my terrific writing buddies who encouraged me continually with their prayers and cyber hugs, or my crit partners who helped to improve my story. Yes, they've been great! I'm talking about my partnership with God.

Just as I cupped my hand over that small child's to help him form his letters, God's hand covered mine as I typed my novel. I've prayed and asked Him to fill me with the ink of His Holy Spirit so that my words may be engraved on the hearts of others in a way that reflects His Glory. My prayer came from one of my new favorite verses comes from 2 Corinthians 3:2-3 NIV:

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on the tablets of human hearts.

How do you react to exciting news? Who is the first person you share it with? What do you do to celebrate?

LitFUSE Blog Tour: Sons of Thunder

by
Susan May Warren

Lisa's Thoughts:
I received Sons as Thunder free from the publisher in exchange for this book review, but even if I hadn't, I would've bought the book as soon as it hit the shelves. I've been a Susan May Warren fan since I found her books in 2003. Excitement rushed through me when I learned about the Brothers in Arms series. Susie has a way of taking the reader on a journey--both emotionally and spiritually--as her characters experience challenging circumstances to find their happily ever afters.

That's what I expected when I started reading Sons of Thunder, but I can honestly say the book went above and beyond, taking me on an unforgettable journey with characters who have stayed in my thoughts long after I closed the book. Immersing me in a rich storyworld on the sands of a small Greek community, Susie painted word pictures that created vivid images as I turned the pages. Her characters with their own unique voices and goals solidified the story in my heart when I cheered them on or grieved alongside them through their circumstances.

My heart broke in several places by the choices made by the characters, but Susie dealt with a difficult issue with understanding, grace, and showed the redemptive power of God's unconditional love. Although the book was not riddled with Bible verses or showed characters attending church, the story showed God's redeeming grace without overpowering the reader.

Susie May's books get better and better, but I have to say Sons of Thunder is the best book she has written to date. I'm so excited to read the rest of the series!!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Sophie Frangos is torn between the love of two men and the promise that binds them all together. Markos Stavros loves Sophie from afar while battling his thirst for vengeance and his hunger for honor. Dino, his quiet and intelligent brother, simply wants to forget the horror that drove them from their Greek island home to start a new life in America. One of these sons of thunder offers a future she longs for, the other the past she lost. From the sultry Chicago jazz clubs of the roaring twenties to the World War II battlefields of Europe to a final showdown in a Greek island village, they'll discover betrayal, sacrifice and finally redemption. Most of all, when Sophie is forced to make her choice, she'll learn that God honors the promises made by the Sons of Thunder.

Sons of Thunder launches the new Romantic Suspense line for Summerside Press - it will be available to purchase in Wal-mart mid-January. Also - its uniquely written - its an epic suspense story written as three novellas - 3 points of view, 3 settings.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Susan May Warren is the award-winning author of seventeen novels and novellas with Tyndale, Steeple Hill and Barbour Publishing. Her first book, Happily Ever After won the American Fiction Christian Writers Book of the Year in 2003, and was a 2003 Christy Award finalist.
