Yesterday concluded our four-day missions conference at church. We had a young pastor as our keynote speaker. He closed with this question:

“When was the last time you asked God to do something so great that there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that God moved?”

Wow.

How often do we believe God can do amazing things? I’m sure readers are nodding their heads. If not, they should be. Now, how often do we believe God can do amazing things with us or through us? Hmmm, how many of you paused about that?

You see, God loves each and everyone of us. He created us. He wants to use us for His divine purpose. The Bible is full of ordinary men, women, and children whom He has used in extraordinary ways.

Noah built a giant boat.

Moses had a speech impediment, yet led God’s children out of Egypt.

Sarah and Abraham gave birth to a son in their twilight years.

David, a shepherd boy, slew a giant and became a great leader.

Mary gave birth to the King of Kings.

I could go on, but you can read these amazing stories for yourself. You may be thinking I’m just an ordinary woman or man or teen or child. God can’t use me. Oh, really? Without faith, He won’t. But, yes, He can.

As Christians, we need to believe ALL things are possible with God, including using us for His divine purposes.

Junk Food is My Heroin: Confessions of an Emotional Eater

After a stressful morning, my thoughts didn’t linger on the turkey and cheddar on whole wheat I planned for lunch. Nope, they longed for the Star Crunches and Baked Cheetos on top of the fridge.

Stressed spelled backwards is desserts, so instead of drowning my frustrations in alcohol, puffing on a cigarette, or taking drugs, I eat junk food. Little Debbie has been my best friend since I was old enough to buy them for myself. Mad at the world? Grab a handful of chips. Having chocolate melt on my tongue feels like sinking into a tubful of bubbles. Sigh...

Using food as an emotional outlet is unhealthy. Yes, I know that. My hips know that. But someone needs to tell me brain so it will stick. I came across this article about Emotional Eaters. Great information. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I recognized myself in many of the things listed in the article.

Just as God can help the alcoholic or addict, He can help the emotioanl eater. Instead of reaching for junk food, I should be reaching for my Bible. But I have another confession--it isn’t always that easy. I’m human. Imperfect. I know God is my refuge and my strength, but sometimes my worldly desires battle my spiritual desires and that junk food wins.

So, now, my goal is to remember to pray and ask for God’s guidance when my emotions go haywire. With His help, I can do anything.

I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.
Philippines 4:13

I’m Not a Picky Eater! I’m a Supertaster!

Tonight at dinner, Hubby asked DS 2 what he learned in school. Like every other typical teenager, he responded with a shrug and “nothing.” Terrible waste of taxpayer dollars, if you ask me. I mean after all, these poor kids sit in classrooms for eight hours a day and learn absolutely nothing.

A few minutes later, I asked Hubby what he learned in school today. (He’s a non-traditional student earning his degree in Business Administration: Marketing and Management. Yeah, it’s a mouthful.)

Anyway, he looked at me, smiled, and said, “I learned you’re a supertaster.” Suddenly I had visions of a billowing red cape and awesome super powers. Curious, I asked for clarification and prayed it had nothing to do with the size of my hips.

Apparently I am a supertaster because I have more taste buds than the average taster. An increased amount of little bumps on a supertaster’s tongue help determine the different taste senses like sour, sweet, bitter, spicy.

Supertasters may be labeled as picky eaters, but truth be told, they simply find it difficult to eat foods like vegetables like broccoli, spinach, & brussel sprouts, coffee, grapefruit to name a few.

About 25% of the population are supertasters, 50% being normal tasters, and 25% are non-tasters. They are the ones who eat most anything. Hubby is a non-taster. There are very few foods he won’t eat.
So, instead of calling us picky eaters, remember that we are simply overly sensitive to certain foods!

Image: Society for Neuroscience
